The Complete New Yorker DVD
Finally, the Complete New Yorker DVD that I bought last week has been arrived.
“Yeah, I will open the great box of my life. Worth of anything. The history of 80 years prestigious journalism practices came to life.”
Well, truly, it’s a pretty good packaging. Wrapped carefully, and the DVD sets, including the book is beautifully designed. I check all the materials and found that 8 DVD sets brightly designed with thick smooth border. Good enough.
I just curious, it’s was very fast shipping among other thing I bought on the internet. Just 4 days. From the stamp I read on the box, it been shipped from United States. Wow, thanks New Yorker.
I turn on my computer and quickly install the software. After it all has been finished, I click the New Yorker program. And, the sh*t happened.
I got this error, “String was not recognized as a valid Date Time..”
Because my home computer didn’t connected to the internet. I found the resolutions in the next day. I downloaded the patch from New Yorker ftp server, which now seems offline. And the problem resolved. Well, I think the problem came from my date-time setting which localized to Indonesian settings.
Then, another problem happened. After browse cover by cover and reading synopsis, I can’t even read the issue even my DVD has been inserted correctly. So, I try the DVD hack to copy magaziens issues into my harddrive instead reading all from the DVD drive, which always had a problem.
I copy the appropriate .djvu files into the “C:\Program Files\NY…Viewer\Issues”. Because of hardisk limitation, I only had 10GB left, I only copy the newer issues (from 1998-2005). Then, I login to sqlite-3 console, and update the sql data using instruction provided by gustaf on his blog.
sqlite> update Issues set DiskID = 9 where DiskID <> 9;
Voila!
After restarting the New Yorker Viewer, I found that I quickly can read the DVD sets smoothly. As smooth as its page by page viewing. I thought it might be my computer, but wonder if it just the applications.
Yesterday, I found that the ftp server has been shutted down. I don’t know how I will find the next NY updates.
For now, I know I will had a great time to read every pieces available on the best journalism practices on my home. A piece that record 80 years or so historical record of contemporary issues.
Note: I had a submitted problems but until now hasn’t been replied by any New Yorker’s support staffs.
